Now in Villafranca des Beirzo

First, let me apologize for my spelling. The Internet is not as readily available as I had hoped so I have to post using my phone. On top of that, the spellcheck function does not work on the phone. I will try harder to catch the typos but I hope you are getting the drift.
yesterday, I walked from Hospital de Orbigo to Astorga which was a relatively shirt walk compared to some of the others. Astorga is a beautiful small city/big town. It's amazing to walking through these towns on the weekend vs a weekday. The weekend, everyone is out socializing whereas on weekdays, you can walk through some towns and quite literally not see a soul.
I have now left the Meseta and am back in the more mountianous area. Tomorrow, the walk from here to O'Cebrerio is going to be a challenge. I haven't done this high a climb since the first day and I am having not so pretty flashbacks to that climb from St Jean Pied de Port to Roncesvalles. It ain't going to be pretty but I am hoping I am in a bit better/different shape now. It is also about a 28km day. I am actually staying on top of the mountain tomorrow night which I am looking forward to so the next day will be the climb down which is painful for a completely different set of muscles.
Adios for now.

  1. Hey guy, I'm not sure why your are apologizing for your spelling mistakes and who complained anyhow? I am just grateful that you are posting regularly and that we can keep track of where you have been and where you are going. Some of the names of the towns are quite amusing to say the least, of course once you've translated them into English. It scares me to think of you walking alone along those busy highways. Please be very careful! It sounds so exciting and adventurous to discover the cultural aspects of a country and its people good and bad. Maybe they had a bad experience with the pilgrims or just a long summer of them. But, glad to hear that hostel owners turned out to be kind. For us it hardly seems that you have been gone for 3 weeks. Time flies! I downloaded my pictures and some of them are truly amazing. I couldn't believe that I was there and saw what I saw. Today I have jet lag and then tomorrow it's back to work. Oh yes, tonight is the beginning of a new Amazing Race (15) and one couple get the boots in LA before they actually leave. Today was a gorgeous day in the city, perfect fall day and unusually warm. All is well and looking forward to hearing from you again. We (I) miss you much!

  4. Dear Bill,
This is a wonderful blog! I feel like I'm in Spain with all of you. The last time I was there was 1971 on my way to India. Spain of course is the home of two wonderful Carmelite saints, St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross. Keep the newsy posts coming!....Maggie Scott
